What is a black screen online tool?
Online Black Screen is a free, web-based tool that requires no downloads or installation. It fills your entire display with pure black (#000000), making it useful for monitor and TV testing, checking for backlight bleeding, stuck pixels, and true black performance on OLED displays.
Beyond screen testing, a black screen can be useful for various other purposes. With ScreenDock, you can generate and download a pure black screen in your preferred size and resolution, and create different black gradients whenever needed.
How do I use a black screen to test for backlight bleed?
- Open the Black Screen in Full-Screen Mode
Open the ScreenDock black screen tool and switch to full-screen mode using the Fullscreen button or icon. - Darken Your Environment
Reduce the lighting in the room or environment where you are testing. Then carefully inspect the edges and corners of your display. - Look for Backlight Bleeding
If your display has backlight bleeding, you may notice uneven bright spots, glowing areas, or light leaking around the edges and borders of an LCD or IPS screen.
Tip: Backlight bleeding is usually easier to see in a dark room against a pure black background.
What’s the difference between backlight bleed and IPS glow?
Backlight bleeding is uneven and persistent light leakage that is concentrated in specific areas or along the edges of an LCD panel. It is generally considered a manufacturing defect.
In contrast, IPS glow is a natural characteristic of IPS panels. It appears as a soft, hazy glow, usually near the corners of the screen, and can change depending on your viewing angle. It is generally not considered a defect or manufacturing fault.
Can a black screen test detect dead pixels?
No. A black screen cannot reliably reveal dead pixels because dead pixels remain dark and may blend into a black background. To make dead pixels easier to identify, it is better to use a white screen test.
A black screen is more useful for detecting stuck pixels, backlight bleeding, and other light-related display issues.
Does using a black screen save battery on OLED devices?
Yes. A black screen can significantly improve battery life on OLED and AMOLED displays because individual pixels can turn off completely when displaying black, consuming little to no power. However, this benefit does not apply to LCD displays, because their backlight remains on regardless of the color being displayed.
Why should I test my screen in a dark room?
This is because ambient light can hide or mask minor display issues, making it much easier to identify backlight bleeding, dim or stuck pixels, and uneven brightness. For the most accurate results, allow your eyes about 30 seconds to adjust to the darkness before inspecting the screen.
Does the black screen tool work on phones, tablets, monitors, and TVs?
Absolutely. ScreenDock works on virtually any device with a modern web browser, including smartphones (iOS and Android), tablets, laptops, desktop monitors, and smart TVs. No app or software installation is required—you can access ScreenDock directly through your browser and display it in full-screen mode.
